Het museum heeft een grootscheepse verbouwing ondergaan. Bouwen in Gelderland besteedde daar tweemaal aandacht aan. Benthem Crouwel Architects ontwierp het plan en heeft hiermee de Nationale Staalprijs 2022 in de categorie Utiliteitsbouw gewonnen. Het museum is uiteraard supertrots!
Het nieuwe deel van het museum dat boven de stuwwal zweeft biedt een spectaculaire blik op de stad en het omliggende landschap. Een cliffhanger die uniek is voor Nederland. De techniek die Pieters Bouwtechniek in samenwerking met Rots Bouw en Civiele technieken deBoer bv heeft moeten toepassen om het gebouw ‘uit te schuiven’ is minstens zo spectaculair en wordt vooral toegepast bij het bouwen van bruggen.

From the jury report: “On the moraine, the expansion of Museum Arnhem balances next to the proud dome of the original gentlemen’s society from the 19th century. Not only does the museum extension frame an interesting outdoor room, taking its natural place in the surroundings, the new façade with its hovering volume also adds a representative symbolic value to the entire museum building. The final result looks so light that you don’t realise the immense constructive power underneath. It is the serving role of steel, used invisibly, is rarely so evident.” ‘.. A tour de force’”.
